Important dates for August
Aug.16-Picture Day
Aug. 19-Aug. 21-No school for students. MCS Professional Development Days for Employees
Aug. 22-Return to school
Aug. 22- Progress Reports go home
Please practice student number on front of daily folder or trifolder. Your child needs to memorize their 10 digit number this year. The cafeteria uses this number to access your child's lunch account when going through the lunch line and the students also need to know their number to login to Learning Farm, an educational app for reading and math, that we use at school and home. Thank you for your support!
A new school year begins and volunteers are always a vital part of our schools' success.  Please encourage your volunteers to reactivate!
Each year between July 1st and October 31st all approved volunteers must verify their intent to continue volunteering by updating their background check online (MCS website, parents, volunteer, volunteer application).
On November 1st any active volunteer who has not completed the re-activation process will be automatically in-activated and will no longer be able to volunteer at any McDowell County School. To be re-activated at this point requires a new criminal background request to be completed (adding additional, unnecessary cost to MCS. $$$). This also includes chaperoning on field trips this school year.
Reading A-Z- Login information coming home this week. The students have been logging in when they go to the Listen to Reading station. Most of them can login independently if you want your child to start this awesome reading app now.

Dear Parent,
Our school now has access to a great new resource called Learning Farm www.learningfarm.com Learning Farm provides high quality practice and instruction designed for our state’s standards in a fun and engaging format. Learning Farm is a great supplement to the work our teachers and students are doing in the classroom. Your child can practice and reinforce knowledge and skills being taught at school by using Learning Farm at home on a computer or tablet. The program is very easy to use; here are some brief instructions for your child to it at home:
1) Your child’s teacher will provide a Learning Farm username and password specifically for your child.(Username is their lunch account number and password is egms)
2) Login to Learning Farm www.learningfarm.com
3) Select a subject
4) Click on a topic to study • More than one topic can be selected for a session by clicking the pages icon above the topic list. Note: for multi-topic sessions the lessons will not be offered.
5) Complete the Lesson • The lesson is an animated tutorial followed by interactive practice questions. It is recommended but not required that students complete the lesson before moving on to a practice session.
6) Select test mode or one of the fun games •
Enter enough correct responses to earn a medal. Bronze, silver, and gold medals are awarded for increasing levels of proficiency. • Medals are awarded based on the last 30 questions answered. • Content adapts based on the student’s performance.
We are excited about having access to this new resource for our students and encourage you to allocate time for them to use it at home. If you have any questions or need any assistance, please contact your child’s teacher.
Thank you,
Learning Farm Team
